Insomniac V Productions and Nightculture.com and Bassrush presents

DUB STEP vs. DRUM n BASS..........

NOISIA

(who took their name from the word ‘VISION’ inverted on an upside down VHS tape) are Nik Roos, Thijs de Vlieger and Martijn van Sonderen, hailing from the Netherlands. Influenced by an eclectic range of artists, from The Prodigy to James Brown, Miles Davis to Konflict, Noisia make music for DJs and dance-floors that is interesting enough to cross over from the clubs to your MP3 player.

2005 saw Noisia establish their own label, Vision Recordings to put out their drum&bass productions and collaborations and retain creative control of their music. Nik designs almost all of the artwork for the releases on their labels, and the guys love the challenges and rewards that come with running a label. Vision Recording’s biggest releases to date have been ‘The Tide’, ‘Exodus’ Feat. KRS One and ‘Stigma’. In 2007 they established Division, a non-D&B label for electro, breaks and house.

Over the past few years, accolades for Noisia have included ‘Best Producers’ at the Dutch D&B Awards in 2006 and 2007, Knowledge Mag Top 20 Tunes of the Decade 2000 – 2009: No 4 with ‘The Tide’, ‘Best Tech DJ’ in the UK National D&B Awards in 2009 and ‘Best Drum&Bass Artist’ on Beatport.

EMALKAY

With initial support in the form of grime veteran Plastician, “Birmingham’s finest” Emalkay gained the attention of South London based label Boka Records with the warped, future bass drones and epic strings of Gut Feeling. Continuing the success, Testing The Waters EP was released in October 2006 followed by Monsters in June 2007.

The revolutionary sound of Mecha, released in the fall of 2007, gained Emalkay support from the likes of Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs and breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty, as well as many of the leading figures of the current dubstep scene. It seemed Emalkay’s own potential as a pivotal dubstep artist was finally being realised. His final release on Boka Records was the reggae influenced My Story in April 2008.

In the fall of 2008, Emalkay produced Explicit - a tune that gradually captured the interest of such prominent dubsteppers as Benga and received major support from acts such as The Scratch Perverts and drum and bass duo Chase and Status. After being approached by Caspa however, the track was finally released on the Dub Police label in February 2009 after much anticipation.

DJ FRESH

The drum & bass DJ Fresh (Dan Stein) is part owner of Breakbeat Kaos and a prolific UK drum and bass producer.

In 2009 Knowledge Magazine said ‘Perhaps DJ Fresh has been the biggest influence on drum and bass we’ve ever known’. DJ Fresh is one of the members of the Bad Company UK / )E|3( group who has gone on to release as a solo artist.
