What kind of power does your rig have?
Im about to build a new computer and Iwas wondering what kind of computing power your production programs require... or more precisely, what kind of power do you have in your rig that allows them to run smoothly and fast?
I dont want to break the bank on building a pc and hopefully wont spend more than 500 bucks

You just answered your own question. Assuming you aren't also buying a monitor/interface/everything else, $500 will get you a lot of PC, especially since you're building your own. Get together the most powerful setup you can for that price and you're gonna be fine.
There are a handful of plugins that are really really demanding on resources (u-He Diva, D16 LuSH-101, etc), but unless you're planning on using one of those as your primary synth (or doing something crazy like trying to run dozens of instances of a normal plugin at the same time), you're going to be fine with pretty much anything that $500 will get you.
[Edit] But to answer your question, I'm running a 2.5 GHz Intel i5 with 4 GB of ram. It's nothing too special spec-wise, and I've never had a project file that even came close to maxing it out.

I RUN A DUAL QUAD G5 WITH 4 GIGS OF RAM
I HARDLY EVER RUN THE PROCESSOR VERY INTENSIVELY BUT I DO BOTTLENECK AT RAM QUITE A BIT, ESPECIALLY IF I HAVE OTHER PROGRAMS RUNNING AT THE SAME TIME

Sweet. thats all good info to know. I know the most expensive part is gonna be buying the cpu and video card. but then again buying the production software will probably be waay more expensive than anything else. which is kinda fuctup
