Ableton question
wasnt sure where to post this question, but I know at least Shane uses ableton.
So I finally went out and broke the bank to buy the program. Reinstalled windows vista onto my computer and put as much RAM as my Dell will support (2G). Got a Lexicon Lamda sound card, I have an 80G hard drive and a 2.8Ghz processor. All of which I figured would run the program ok.
I got to work and everything was running fine until I got to about my 7th created clip. I was playing around with one of the preset pads and it starts popping and glitching a little. Im thinking.. ok, maybe its just that one. When I go to start arranging everything it starts really popping and glitching as it gets to the meat of the song to the point where it wont hardly make it through. I looked at my system performance while its playing and the little memory graph thing is peaking while ableton is playing.
So do you think I have get a new computer or what?

Re: Ableton question
I have a 2gHz with a gig of RAM, and I can run it great. it might be that you don't have the audio latency set high enough. this is in preferences, under audio.

Re: Ableton question
vinyl's only good if you're playing other people's music.
I actually like dj'ing with ableton, though I haven't done it in front of an audience yet.

Re: Ableton question
if I'm dj'ing dubstep, it's a jump drive plugged into someone else's serato mostly.
anything else, it's all vinyl.

Re: Ableton question
so I should change the input or the output or both?
I turned both of them as high as they would go and it is a little better but still stutters. I tried turning up the driver error compensator as well and that didnt do much.

Re: Ableton question
tell me a little more about your soundcard. is it possible that your soundcard is set to a different sampling rate/bitdepth than ableton (like say your soundcard's set to 16 bit/44.1kHz and ableton's internal settings are set to 24 bit/96kHz)?

Re: Ableton question
yeah you overloaded your RAM / CPU
set your playback buffers to a higher value
you system should be able to handle it
if I were you I'd uninstalll vista and run XP
Vista seems to have alot of issues because it is such a resource hog
if you like Vista you can tweak windows vista for audio

Re: Ableton question
I run it on XP and have never run it on a vista computer. who knows, there may be something to that.
I do have to say that I've never had a single problem running vista, but I don't use that machine for music. it doesn't even have a sound card.

Re: Ableton question
no I don't use ableton
but that shit happens in any application
send to much info to your cpu = crackle crackle pop pop BAD
yeah man, I went out and bought a copy of Windows XP the week Vista was released
I used windows 2000 until they released windows XP sp2
those fucks will sell you anything in the name of "upgrade" but Microsoft has proven that they really don't pay any attention to the pro audio world
I am certain of that

Re: Ableton question
meh, I use logic on a mac and ableton and nuendo on a pc with XP. ain't much difference when you get down to it really.
the thing that sucks about microshaft is that they release product months before it's actually ready to go, and THEN fix the bugs. I wouldn't buy one of their os's before at least a year after the release date.

yeah this lesson ^^ saved me a buncha headaches after i picked it up...
tho i'm still working on freezing something and then converting the frozen to a new audio track from a midi clip....
KidLogic always tells me how and I always forget. Dunno why I can't seem to remember how to make audio from midi tracks. Dammit he's told me like 5 diff times and i can't ever remember
Re: Ableton question
LOL
"export as Audio"
with the MIDI channel solo'd out maybe?

Re: Ableton question
yeah all you do is go to file and "export audio/media" then select the channel/track that you want rendered as audio (instead of master like when you export a finished song for example) then you have yourself a wav that doesn't tax your CPU and you can keep building!

Re: Ableton question
Thanks you guys! Hopefully seeing this in print will help me remember it better. Worse case scenario, I can always come and look it up here

The trick she was talking about is a good one.
Freeze a midi track, then grab the clip you want and drag it to an audio track and it will render the waveform of the midi right there, no exporting.
In ableton, when you freeze a midi track, it creates a waveform that plays in the background so it can free up the resources that would usually be taken up by the plugs and instruments. Dragging it to an audio track takes that waveform out of the background.

oh yeah i forgot about that one!!!!

Re: Ableton question
so why don't you just skip freezing the midi track and export it into a wav, disable the VST, and keep the midi track?
